To force Gohan to get serious, Cell spawns Cell Juniors from his own cells and tramples the Z Warriors at ringside all at once. Android 16 steps in, tells Gohan to protect what he loves, and has his head crushed by Cell a heartbeat later. Gohan's rage crosses the line, and Super Saiyan 2 awakens with spiked gold hair and lightning. The Cell Juniors are wiped out, and even Perfect Cell is beaten one-sidedly. Cornered, Cell chooses to self-destruct with the Earth, and Goku Instant Transmissions him to North King Kai's planet. In the blast Goku dies with King Kai, Bubbles, and Gregory. But a nucleus in the head survives, and Cell returns to Earth as a still stronger Super Perfect Cell. A father's sacrifice and a son's awakening are delivered at the same time.
